The Gurkhas
Remember Gordon Brown getting lambasted by the right wing media for denying them citizenship and having to kowtow to the want of the Tory mouthpiece Lumley?

Well it seems it's all gone a bit Pete Tong, as predicted by GB himself.......

Joanna Lumley's legacy of misery: She fought to allow retired Gurkhas into Britain with her heart in the right place. Five years on, even they say it's backfired terribly.....

Re: The Gurkhas
So they wanted to come here as they felt they were owed and entitled to be here, I dont have a problem with that, but now they are having to live in shitty little bedsits just like every other WW2 veteran of little means...Welcome to the UK, this is how we treat our elderly, with little regard and care as to whether they live or die.

This is why wearing the poppy and showing up at the Cenotaph is a nothing more than lipservice. We care for dead more than the living.

Re: The Gurkhas
I know a few people who live in Aldershot. They're all pretty vocal about this, and not in a positive way.

I generally dislike the DM but I think this article was very well written. The Ghurkha stuff was all with the very best of intentions, just executed fucking appallingly, the same as a lot of stuff in this country.

And no, I don't think anyone who's served our country should be "sent home", before anyone starts.

Is there anything vaguely to do with Thailand in that DM article? The page is blocked here.

Thanks. I didn't really want it posted on here in case it could have contained anything unacceptable - If all us ex-pats suddenly drop out of sight, I guess that will be answer enough.

I like how they're all lonely and don't know anyone and yet there are thousands of them. Also if they're all homesick they should go home.

Unemployed in Aldershot or looking after a goat in the foothills of the Himalayas? It's a no brainer. Go home to the goat.

Re: The Gurkhas
Enough of them to form a cohesive group/social club? I'm sure all they need is a pointer as to how to do so and they'll take on all the admin & responsibility themselves.

Re: The Gurkhas
I'm from Aldershot.

Admittedly this all went down way after I left but obviously I still have the majority of friends and family there.

Everyone is pissed of with the situation big time(including the Nepali people).Zero assimilation going on there. No where near enough social services.

Us Aldershotians are very proud of our military history and we had nothing but the utmost respect for Ghurka lads but Lumley dropped the ball on this one big time. That respect has turned into massive resentment by the local community.

It might be in the DM but it's absolutely true at ground level.

Anybody that would deny these heroes and their family access to this country are obviously massive twats!
